Quick follow-up on sleep apnea

I had an appointment with the sleep specialist doctor yesterday.  He looked at my sleep study results again and decided that I might benefit from some oxygen at night.  During REM sleep, my oxygen saturations drop down into the low 60s!  My brain and heart should be much happier and healthier with more oxygen.  So I will be on oxygen in addition to BiPAP at night.  He prescribed 2 liters per minute, which equates to 28% oxygen inhaled.  In comparison, regular air is just 21% oxygen.  I’m waiting for the home health company to call to set up delivery.  I’ll keep you posted!

  1. Hello, I too have a bi-pap machine. I was on a Cpap for several years but continued to have no improvement. I have been on it for @ 5-6 months. In the past 3 months they finally realized that my condition is Complex Apnea (when you have both “Obstructive and Central Apnea”). In addition to random episodes of obstructive airway problems, my primary problem is that my brain is not signalling me to breathe (Central Apnea). My pressure was changed 1 week ago following another Titration (sp?) Study at the hospital. It was increased to a pressure of 30. The machine is set to breathe for me at 28 breaths per minute mostly b/c of the central apnea events & I too have Oxygen 2 liters per min. I’m having problems with it actually bloating my stomach. I’m not a person who normally burps or has issues with excessive gas pain, or gas, UNTIL NOW. My stomach hurts so bad in the morning & I burp like I’m in a contest for it. It’s uncomfortable and embarassing. I was wondering if you have ever had this problem or ever heard of it and have any suggestions. My pulminologist suggested the chin strap today because he says I’m swallowing air from opening my mouth in the full face mask. Any informations you might suggest would be appreciated. Good luck to you.
    Sincerely,
    Karen Johnson
